The very next thing I find enormously helpful is a command line package manager. Update: it’ll take more than a few hours. But fear not! I’m currently evaluating how long it will take to configure `oh-my-zsh` to perform like my custom bash environment. Perhaps you’ll test my cage before you rattle it in the comments, perhaps you won’t. Perhaps some day a glimmer of tab-complete-this or syntax-highlight-that will un-Gollum me, but until then I’ll be riddled with Stockholm Syndrome, petting my precious in my prison shell (see what I did there?). Years ago I began building a custom bash configuration, and I haven’t spent much time looking in the rearview. Blame it on the juice, or on my childhood love for the Oakland A’s. Now, some of you are bound to be all like totally “ Oh My Zsh! No way, Jose!” when I spill the next bit: I like to use `bash` in the Terminal. Then I install the Piperita terminal theme and voila, my Terminal is drop-dead gorgeous and cooking with gas. ~/dotfiles/install.sh # reload the shell using the newly installed dotfiles. Nowadays I can get my command line feeling like home in three easy commands: # tell Terminal to copy my Canseco dotfiles into the $HOME directory cd ~ git clone # run the install script for Canseco. But then again I might not: turning it off and back on again isn’t always the answer. And I might advise restarting your machine after you run this script. Perhaps most notably the keyboard and trackpad will become considerably more sensitive.
Animations and polish are sacrificed for performance.
Some interfaces are minimized and optimized. Generally though, lots of annoying warnings are silenced. I’ve loaded it with inline comments that explain what each command does. In fact, I suggest you read through the shell script first. And to undo it, you’ll have to read through the shell script line by line and grok what it did. You can copy/paste/execute this in your Terminal to fire it up: bash <(curl -s )įair warning: this script will make your OS X run like I would like it to run. When it comes to Mac OS X, there are several things I like to hack to really dial in the power user experience. Mac OS X comes configured to make our lives pretty easy and efficient, as does Windows, each occupying their particular, preordained positions. Please don’t misconstrue my recent run of Macs I’m not opinionated about OSs or platforms. And now I’ve got this new shiny new MacBook, which is diminutive and extraordinary. Work lent me a MacBook Air and a Surface Pro 2 for a while so I got the chance to familiarize with Windows 8 in its native environment. From there I upgraded to a plastic iMac, then a plastic MacBook, then a couple of aluminum MacBook Pros, the latter of which I still have. I replaced that with an early iBook - the iceBook as they called it, given its white plastic shell. I ran Windows 98 on my first personal computer-a custom-built Pentium tower, a veritable powerhouse in its day and age. Then at home we got a 486SX running Windows 95, and later a Performa 630CD with Mac OS 7. At school and at neighbors’ houses there were DOS prompts on PCs of various configurations to hack. I’ve alternated between Macs and Microsofts for as long as I can remember. I used the App Store to get Xcode, then ran `git` in the Terminal to trigger the Command Line Tools installation dialog.
It would also behoove you to install the Xcode command line tools, especially if you’d like to use things like `gcc`, `make`, or `git` in the foreseeable future. Xcode is a big download-more than two billion bits-and the install needs to root out a bit, so it’s best to get this started and out of the way early on. If you don’t, you may not appreciate the rest of this post, and you can skip this step.
